Mônica Maia is an editor, curator and cultural producer.
She is the creator of the Mulheres Luz project, a platform for researching and publishing content produced by female photographers and women of the image, launched in 2021.
Partner of DOC Galeria [2012-2022] and producer of Mostra SP de Fotografia [2011-2022].
She was a photographer and editor at Agência Estado, O Estado de S.Paulo and Jornal da Tarde [1987-2007] and a contributor to Folha de S.Paulo since 2012.
In 1999 she was the first Brazilian to be a World Press Photo juror, since then she has been a member of the Joop Swart Masterclass, and in 2024 she returned to the institution as a regional juror for South America.
She curated the 3rd Meeting of Photographic Collectives – ECO, in 2014, in Santos, SP. She was curator of the MIS-SP New Photography Programme [2019-2023].
With DOC she managed the Nikon Gallery [2014-2016] and launched FotoFeira Cavalete with 13 editions.
In 2021 she curated the festivals EverydayBrasil and Festival de Imagens Periféricas. She curates calls for proposals for the Tiradentes Photography Festival in Minas Gerais.
She reads portfolios and monitors projects.
She is president of the Network of Cultural Producers of Photography in Brazil – RPCFB and is a member of the National Council for Cultural Policy – CNPC.
